A stock index is a basket of company stocks that is widely used as a method of measuring the performance of a certain market and is also used as a benchmark by many financial firms. The most regularly quoted stock indices are composed of the largest public companies listed on a country largest stock exchanges, for example the US S&P 500, Hang Seng, and Japanese Nikkei 225. The performance of a quoted stock index may indicate investor sentiment on the economic condition of the particular country.
